Walking through Frieze Los Angeles--capturing moments of inspiration along the way.
Lydia Guerrero’s work is rooted in a lifelong instinct to create—an instinct she is now returning to with renewed focus and intention. After years spent raising a family, working in graphic design, and remaining closely connected to art through museums and cultural spaces, she has reentered the studio to explore painting at a foundational level.
Her current practice centers on layered painting—building, obscuring, and reworking surfaces to discover what emerges over time. Rather than working toward a fixed style, Guerrero approaches each piece as part of an ongoing search: a process of learning, unlearning, and allowing direction to reveal itself through the act of making.
At times, her process echoes the responsiveness of Impressionism—capturing fleeting impressions—while also embracing the freedom and emotional charge associated with Expressionism. Through layering, revision, and disruption, each painting becomes a space where structure and intuition meet.
Alongside her personal practice, Guerrero is building a local art community centered around shared exploration and creative connection. Through intimate gatherings, workshops, and collaborations with experienced artists and instructors, she creates opportunities for others to engage with art in an open and supportive environment. These experiences emphasize observation, experimentation, and creating alongside one another.
This dual focus—developing her own visual language while fostering a community of making—reflects a belief that art is both a personal pursuit and a shared experience.
